Instructions for after the Intervention
A. Wound Care
Bite down firmly on the gauze in place for about an hour, then remove it gently.
Avoid smoking for 12 hours, as it can cause bleeding and delay healing.
B. Bleeding
- It is normal for some blood to seep from the wound. You may notice a bloodstain on your pillow in the morning.
- Do not spit or use a straw, as this may cause bleeding.
- If bleeding resumes, place a wet gauze directly over the tooth socket and bite down firmly for 30 minutes.
- Keep your head elevated with a few pillows, or rest in an armchair.
C. Discomfort
- Some pain after the procedure is normal and can be managed with the prescribed medication.
- Take medication with a full glass of water and a small amount of food to avoid stomach upset.
- Avoid alcohol while taking pain medication.
D. Nutrition
- Drink plenty of fluids, but do not use a straw, as it may cause bleeding.
- Once you remove the gauze, you may eat normally. Soft, cold foods like ice cream or yogurt are recommended for the first day.
E. Oral Hygiene
- Do not rinse or brush your teeth for the first 8 hours after the procedure.
- After 8 hours, rinse gently with salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of water) every 4 hours.
- Brush your teeth gently, avoiding the area of the procedure.
F. Swelling
- Swelling after the procedure is a natural response. It usually peaks about 48 hours after the procedure and may last 4 to 6 days.
- Apply ice to the area of the procedure (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off) to help control swelling and reduce discomfort.
G. Rest
Avoid strenuous physical activity or exercise for 12 hours after the procedure.
H. Bruising
You may notice some bruising around the area of the procedure. This is normal for some people and should resolve on its own in 7 to 14 days.
I. Trismus (Jaw Stiffness)
You may experience jaw tightness and difficulty opening your mouth after the procedure. This is normal and should improve within 5 to 10 days.
J. Stitches
If stitches were placed, they will need to be removed in approximately 7 to 8 days.
