Osseointegration: A Revolutionary Invention
At Dental Place – Brånemark Osseointegration Center Greece, we faithfully adhere to the principles of Osseointegration. This term was coined by Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark after his revolutionary discovery in the 1950s that bone can integrate with titanium components.
P-I Brånemark named his discovery Osseointegration from the Latin word os—meaning bone—and the word integrate, meaning to unify, which can also be interpreted as “interactive coexistence.”
A titanium screw-shaped implant (“fixture”) is carefully placed into the bone, and—quite impressively—the genetic code that would typically cause the bone to reject a foreign material is not activated. Instead, nature allows bone cells to attach to the surface of the titanium, resulting in a stable and permanent foundation for a prosthetic restoration.
